Schools Under Attack: Escalating Crimes by the Israeli Occupation against Education

The Ministry of Education and Higher Education strongly condemns the escalating crimes and violations perpetrated by the Israeli occupation army and settler gangs against Palestinian schools and educational institutions.
The evidence for these crimes is not lacking but, rather, compelling. Today at dawn, the occupation army stormed the Challenge/Tahaddi School in Ibziq, Tubas Education Directorate, vandalized the school, confiscated equipment and educational materials, destroyed water, electricity and internet networks, and blocked the road leading to the school.
Yesterday, the Israeli settlers targeted al-Maleh Co-ed Basic School in Tubas, while the occupation army hindered the access of students in al-Khader town in Bethlehem to their schools. A few days earlier, settler gangs broke into Shallal al-Auja School in Jericho and leaving behind inciteful messages calling for the death of all Arabs.
These heinous attacks constitute a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law and of international conventions that guarantee the right to safe and secure education. Furthermore, they clearly expose the occupation’s policy of depopulating Palestinian areas and targeting the Palestinian presence by deliberately striking one of the most important pillars of resilience: education.
The Ministry of Education and Higher Education affirms that the Israeli occupation bears full responsibility for these crimes and their psychological and educational repercussions on students and teachers. Targeting schools will not deter our people from defending their legitimate right to education, nor will it break the will of our students or undermine our national and humanitarian mission.
The Ministry calls upon the international community, human rights organizations, and UN agencies – particularly UNESCO and UNICEF -, to assume their legal and ethical responsibilities, and intervene immediately to end these repeated violations, provide protection to Palestinian schools and hold the Israeli occupation accountable for its crimes against education.
